VINCENZO POSTIGLIONE was born in Naples, Italy in 1835. He
lived to be 80 years old. At the age of twelve, he became an apprentice to
Vincenzo Jorio. He later started his own shop and was one of the better modern
makers of Naples. His work was influenced by the old masters of Italy. He
particularly patterned his work after Stradivari and Guarneri. His varnish
is usually brown or sometimes red.
My violin has a powerful and rich tone. This is one of the last instruments
that Postiglione made. It has a two piece spruce top, medium grain, with a
two piece maple back superlatively flamed, with matching ribs, neck and scroll.
The instrument is covered in a beautiful, dark red-brown transparent varnish
over a golden ground coat. Even though it is almost 100 years old, the instrument
is in excellent condition.
The first time I saw my violin, I thought the color was so unusual. The different reddish highlights reminded me of the colors of blood and fire.
I love the sound of this violin.
I am very grateful to the Lord for putting this wonderful violin in my hands.
